Pro basketball player Liz Cambage knows confidence is a lifelong process

“Sometimes I forget how powerful my voice is and how I do have younger girls and younger generations looking up to me,” 27-year-old basketballer Liz Cambage tells whimn.com.au from her home in Melbourne.

Why the amnesia for the professional athlete?

“Growing up I didn't have a lot of confidence.”

As a mixed-race preteen growing up in an Anglo-dominated community, the athlete recalls how her inimitable physicality often left her feeling isolated.

“I was one in a million,” Liz says of her childhood. “There was no one else that looked like me and no girls as tall as me, and I really struggled with that growing up.”

She was bullied in both primary and high school.

“It took me a long time to finally be comfortable with myself and be like, ‘This is who I am and there's no changing who I am.’”
